March is National Social Work Month

March is National Social Work Month, a time to recognize the incredible dedication of social workers who advocate for and support those facing life’s challenges. At Faith Presbyterian Hospice (FPH), we are grateful for our outstanding team of social workers: Lauren Barr, Rusty Carter and Isabel Zepeda who bring compassion to those we serve every day. Read below to learn more about a few of these hard working teammates.

LAUREN BARR, FPH INPATIENT SOCIAL WORKER

What do you find most rewarding about your role at Faith Presbyterian Hospice?
As a social worker, I enjoy being able to walk alongside patients and families during their most difficult and vulnerable times. One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is working with wonderfully talented teammates who show so much compassion and care to our patients during their end-of-life journey.

What inspired you to pursue a career in social work?
I was teaching when a friend pursuing her master’s in social work encouraged me to apply. With a bachelor’s degree in a similar field, I originally wanted to work in areas pertaining to adoption or domestic violence. While hospice wasn’t on my radar, I found my passion and have spent most of my career working in this field.

What is one activity or hobby that helps you relax or recharge after a long day?
I enjoy watching movies or going outside to enjoy nature.

RUSTY CARTER, FPH SOCIAL WORKER IN THE FIELD

What do you find most rewarding about your role at Faith Presbyterian Hospice?
I appreciate the holistic aspect of hospice care. At FPH, we focus not just on physical needs but also on emotional, psychological and spiritual well-being. This approach allows me to help patients and families in a comprehensive way.

What inspired you to pursue a career in social work?
After exiting the military, I found myself seeking a sense of purpose and an opportunity to serve others. For me, the transition to civilian life was challenging and I realized I wanted to apply the values I gained from my military experience into a career that would make a meaningful impact. Social work offered me the opportunity to help individuals navigate difficult circumstances. I was attracted to the idea of advocating for those in need and offering emotional and practical support during difficult times. Becoming a social worker allowed me to find the soul-feeding opportunity I was looking for, giving me the chance to use my skills and experiences to positively impact others and help them overcome life’s challenges with dignity and hope.

What’s one activity or hobby that helps you relax or recharge after a long day?
